< Day 156

Day 157 - Monday 28th August 2000

Day 158 >
Up early feelin dryer than yesterday and we're on the road within a couple of hours. On the way out of Yellowstone we came across a large herd of Buffalo grazing beside the road and in the process of crossing the highway, getting involved in mexican standoffs with the traffic, an amazing sight and we felt more comfortable getting close to them from the safety of the car. The road took us east out of the park and into real out back country where we sumbled across an antlers & taxidermy shop, we had a poke around and got chatting to the (slightly bison looking) owner - a very 'Americna' experience. With the exception of a few small towns most of the area was rolling prarie with nothing on the horizon for miles and miles. The tiny farming hamlets we passed all have their town name, elevation and population noted on a sign on the outskirts - the smallest population we saw was 4! Claire wonder's how people cope with living in such isolation, it can't be easy - I eckon they're fine so long as they have satellite TV.

By early evening we had reached the small (but largest in the area) town: Casper and checked into a ramshackle, grotty motel - never make decisions with a full bladder! Out to dinner for giant burgers, where we had the sweetest old waitress ever (she said 'well alright!' to each item of our order) and then back to check our emails and budget, and then fell asleep.
