< Day 157

Day 158 - Tuesday 29th August 2000

Day 159 >
Out of the grotty motel fairly early, our 1st stop was a 'lube shop' to treat the car to an oil change (Homer [car's name] has been coping well with our distances - long may it continue.). This done we continued heading east, out into prarie land once more and over the border into Nebraska. The road paralled a train track for many miles and we were awed by the huge trains - some over a mile long with three locomotives, slowly chugging across the countryside. At lunchtime we stopped in the small country town of Lusk, had lunch in the town park (avoiding the sprinklers) and then visited the Stagecoach museum. Full of pioneer memorabilia, very interesting - even had one of two remaining stagecoachs that ran between Deadwood and Dodge - the ones Calamity Jane worked on! The museum was staffed by a few friendly old boys who looked like they could've experienced those days themselves!. Continued on through the flat almost barren countryside for a few hours until we found a very cheap ($8) state park to camp in, near the town of Chadron. We virtually had the campsite to ourselves, spending the evening planning our route for the next month - time and money are passing quickly!
