< Day 158

Day 159 - Wednesday 30th August 2000

Day 160 >
Up impressively early at 7am and on the road by 9am - part of a commitment to drive further ina day and hopefully to arrive earlier at a campsite. In the morning we took a detour south to see 'Carhenge' - modelled after Stonehenge, built using old American cars painted battleship grey by a family during a reunion. Then another detour north, across the border and into South Dakota to see the amazing rock sculptures of Crazy Horse and Mount Rushmore. Crazy Horse, named after and based on a Native American Hero will be amazing when its finished, but it not yet complete - his face has been completed and the outline of his horse is visible.

Mount Rushmore is total US patriotism and very powerful, even for English folk, due to the achievements of the presidents portrayed and the sheer size of the sculpture. We intended to camp again in the evening, but as we made our way back onto our original route (US20) the skys darkened and we were caught in the middle of several violent storms - bright forks of lightening lighting the sky around us and emergency vehicles whizzing past us on the exposed prairie road. Trying to escape the weather we drove for much longer than intended and finally stopped in Valentine, checked into a motel and went for a late supper (we'd crossed a time zone - Mountain time to Central time) where the waitress called Claire sweetie!
