Pulling back the curtains in our motel room we were greeted by a dull, overcast day - remnants of last nights storms, we continued east out of Valentine with Claire driving and Will reading "Travels with Charley" aloud. Within an hour or so we'd reached the little town of Ewing - thankfully a sweet little country town with wooden houses - where Claire posed for photos next to the town sign. After the photo call we made our way to the Ashfall fossil beds, a pre-historic water hole covered by the ash from a massive erruption in the Yellowstone area some 10 million years ago. It is a most unusual find as the majority of the skeletons are still intact.
The afternoon was spent pushing further east through the uninhabited countryside, we had only one encounter - with a Guatemalan immigrant working at a roadwork. He came over to tell us that we would have a while to wait and might want to switch our engine off an Will struck up a conversation with him. Realising that his English was a little patchy we switched to Spanish and the change in him was wonderful to see - very friendly, shaking our hands and asking us questions in Spanish which we were aboe to answer - its amazing how quickly it comes back. By early evening we had crossed the border into Iowa and set up camp just south of Sioux City.
