< Day 161

Day 162 - Saturday 2nd September 2000

Day 163 >
The day was hot and humid early in South Iowa, so we packed up and left the arguing vacationers behind us, heading north-east back towards highway 20 - which we'd detoured from for the bridges of Madison County. To make up some time and miles (we've committed ourselves to being in Washington a week from today!) we drove on the interstate for a few hours - the more we don't drive on the interstate the more we dislike it when we do - v. boring, no scenary / quirky towns / amusing sights etc. Withina few hours we reached a place Will wanted to visit - a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright which is now open to the public as a showcase of his unique design / style. Very interesting, he designed the house for a couple in the 50's and designed / chose everything, right down to the cutlery. When the owners moved in everything was there for them and he also checked on them a few times afterwards to make sure that were keeping the house as it should be!

We drove for a couple more hours, over the border and into Wisconsin - 'dairy country' as the license plates say - where we found a pitch for our tent at Tom's campsite. The owner Bob (Tom was an uncle) was a chatty character who, on learning Will is half Welsh was pleased to share details of his own Welsh ancestry with us. When Claire walked into the camp office the first thing he said was "British or Norwegian?" We learned that he comes from British / Norwegian stock - he seemed happy to have struck lucky - I wonder how many people he asks?!
