Out of the now deserted campsite early, we slowly drove to the nearest town and got the tyre replaced - luckily we had just received a car insurance rebate from the UK to cover the cost and so we're not out-of-pocket by too much. Money is becoming more of an issue as it runs out, hopefully we'll get some money back on the car?! The road east through northern Indiana took us through 'Amish' country and we passed little black horse drawn buggies on the road, vying for space with cars and trucks. We find it fascinating how they still lead their simple lives apparently unaffected by modern America. We stopped for lunch at an Amish cafe and were served by a traditionally dressed (long pinafore, long hair in a white cap) Amish waitress. The Amish men all have long beards and wear trousers, shirts and braces. We tried not to be gawping tourists, we'd love to hear an Amish persons views on modern America - we wonder if many of the Amish teenagers rebel against their parents chosen lifestyle?
After this tantilising glimpse into another world we wnet straight back into the 21st century life and checked our email. As the tire problem has now thrown out our schedule we decided to visit Washington DC before New York - we had another chatty email from Johnna and wrote back confirming that we will be arriving at the weekend. Paul and Johnna have been really good at keeping in contact via email and we're really looking forward to meeting them again - it was 2 years ago that we met them in Croatia. In the afternoon we took another detour to a place Will wanted to visit - The Auburn motor musuem - packed full of old cars from motorised buggies to sleek, gorgeous 1920s sportscars. In the evening we drove further into Ohio and stopped in a motel n Toledo.
