< Day 167

Day 168 - Friday 8th September 2000

Day 169 >
Claire woke earlier than Will and in a moment of kindness decided not to disturb him and so lay watching the enemy (spiders) climbing on the outside of the tent - Claire thinks she may have a slight phobia as even watching them sickens her. Eventually, enemy or no enemy Claire needed to use the facilities outside and so our day began. We had a leisurely morning driving for only a short while to the town of Frederick where we had decided to spend some time before making another short trip into DC and to P&Js in the evening. Entering Frederick was quite a surprise as its houses are mostly brick terraces, reminding us both of the UK - most places in the US we've been to have wooden detached houses. We spent a relaxing few hours in the town, in a diner and then in the library before tackling rush hour traffic on the route into DC.

To our relief getting to Paul & Johnna's was easy and uneventful, Johnna was outside their cute, porched house as we pulled up. Within minutes we were sitting on the porch, homemade beer in hand chatting easily and we didn't stop for the rest of the evening. P&J are just how we remembered them: very friendly, open, thoughtfull and good company, and we had a really good evening with them. A few more beers before a meal on the deck out back and then moving inside later, chatting constantly about travel, their news, our news, the US and future plans...
