The WISTA Kids Millennium Painting & Drawing Maritime Awareness Event is an event for children to produce a painting or drawing with the sea, ships and people who work in the marine environment as the theme.

The United Nations has declared 1998 the year of the Ocean. We thought this would be the perfect time to explore how the work of WISTA members is seen through the eyes of children.

Many of our children know that we work in the shipping world, but are totally unaware of the environment we are exposed to. This event is designed to encourage our children to be aware of the sea, and the work that WISTA members do. This is a unique opportunity for children to express their understanding of the sea and the marine environment through painting and drawing.

The event is open to children, relatives and/or acquaintances of WISTA members, between the ages of 5 and 16. There are 4 categories based on the age of the child: 5 to 8 years old, 9 to 10 years old, 11 to 13 years old & 14 to 16 years old.

Each contribution will be a winner, as it will help to bring out the individual talent of each child. Like a bridge, this event is designed to bring WISTA members, the shipping world and the young members of our society closer together.

Each country will gather together the paintings and, will forward to the UK, according to the timetable, a maximum of 8 paintings (2 per age group).

Our intentions are to exhibit as many paintings as possible at the 1999 WISTA International Conference, in London, in a suitable location. Afterwards we are planning to incorporate twelve chosen pictures into a calendar for the year 2000, which is why we are naming the event the "WISTA Kids Millennium Painting & Drawing Maritime Awareness Event"

The event will be officially launched at the 1998 International WISTA Conference in New York, USA, (16th, 17th & 18th September 1998).
