Welcome to the Spring edition of the WISTA-UK Newsletter designed to keep you up-to-date with what's happening within WISTA and to inform you of some of the more forward-looking topics within the shipping industry.
Topics in this issue include:
  • A leading UNCTAD lawyer's view on the Problems inherent in the switch to electronic contracts and digital signatories.
  • an overview of some of the serious consequences of the Millennium Bug for every aspect of the maritime.
A report on the Parliamentary Maritime Group's meeting on new developments in satellite technology. This will be of interest to cargo owners and others vulnerable to piracy.
WISTA Chair, Margaret Llewellyn, recently spoke out on the need for the Government to be pro-active in devising policies and initiatives to support the maritime industry. Economists Predict a significant upturn in international trade and there is no reason why UK businesses should not capitalise on the opportunities ahead. Companies should seize every opportunity to lobby both Houses of Parliament if they desire more influence over their future prosperity. The Editorial Committee would like to hear of any issues Members consider should be raised.
We are also privileged that former Lloyd's List Editor, Michael Grey, has submitted a critique on Glenda Jackson's role as Minister of Shipping.
Finally, the Editorial Committee is always interested to receive contributions, suggestions for future articles, and of course, news from you and your company.
Jennie Harris (Lloyd's List)
