The Health care System

One of the first things that you will be greeted with is a requirement to take a tuberculosis test. The fact that you have been immunised in another country cuts no ice. It ain't no big shakes for you but if like me you have a number of small children this is quite a headache. So you have to present yourself to the local Hospital which makes an appointment for you to come back and take the tests. You then have to come back a third time to have the results presented to you. I assume that in the meantime it is quite all right to walk around infecting the locals with TB if you actually did have it. In the end each member of the family is presented with a certificate which no one thereafter EVER wants to see.

The Hospital system in Bergen gets a mixed review as I can only base it on experience. There is an emergency hospital, a bit like the A&E in England. They're very good and efficient. My 3 year old girl needed some urine tests done and they did that and had the results back in my sweating hang inside 15 minutes of having walked through the door. The main hospital I can't comment on from an adult's perspective as none of us had cause to use it but the children's wards and facilities were excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful.
