Sometimes it's the oddest things that make you reapraise
your values and perceptions of that that surrounds us. For those who don't know
me, I have been in the computer business since 1977. So I am very used to these
boxes and have built up a collection (for want of a better word, my wife calls
it "that assorted junk you're always promising to clear out") of
computer bits and pieces. My 13 year old son was scavaging amongst this when he
pulled out an old 386 Sanyo laptop. For those of you too young to remember that
far back this is a 1mb memory 30mb disk monochrome DOS machine!"Does this work, Dad?" he enquires. I just
shrugged my shoulders and suggested he plug it in and see. After more
scrabbling around to locate a lead and power supply I hear,
"Whoa! Mega!" I spin round to see what has got his
attention span, fearing an old copy of Razzle may have been left behind in the
box. But no, he calls his brother over and I hear to my astonishment,
"Hey watch this. 10 seconds from power on to
application up! Speed huh? Can we play with this, Dad?"
That got me thinking. My super duper 128mb Pent III W98
takes about 4 minutes to do its stuff and hand over control and yet this little
antideluvian marvel had you working in 10 seconds. I wonder if we have
progressed in the right direction? I suspect we haven't.
Chew on that!
