For those of you not familiar with the
remoter reaches of this planet, Stavanger is an entirely insignificant town on
the western reach of Norway. It's a sort of stopping place only. Most of those
who stop over here are oil riggers on their way to the Norwegian oil fields in
the North Sea. I stop over here as it is the air flight connection to Bergen
(see the survival guide for more or even the picture section).Anyway, Stavanger airport had a peculiar security feature
that should have been subject to one of my rants. And just as I determined to
write it up on one of my 2 hour stop-overs here, they saw sense and did away with
what had been driving me steadily more insane for years. I'm not quite sure if
I should be grateful for an airport authority using their collective brains or
not. It has taken me by complete surprise.
What they used to have, until very recently, was this; you
landed on an international flight and then had to cross the building to take an
internal flight. OK so far? Then, if you followed the signs, you had to go
through security screening once more. Now that is unusual since most countries don't
subject the traveler to this burden. No, let me be more precise, neither Oslo
(the capital of Norway) nor Bergen do this, just Stavanger.
Now for the crazy part. If before you go to the official
departure gate for internal flights, you walk into one of the shops or bars
adjacent to the gate, they both have exits to the other side!!!! In other words
there was no point in having a security check if there were two independent and
publicly accessible back doors!
Ah well, today (March 27th, 2000) I report that the security
check is absent and the access doors are open and unmanned. So from the depth of
my heart, thank you Stavanger airport, I have one less hassle now.
