Then and Now
1880s - A view of 'the park' from the Morning Room.
The trees are a bit different in 2000:

1893 - The north part of the main pond. Note very few rocks or plants.
The left hand bridge is wood.
2000 Mature trees and shrubs:

1893 - wooden bridge and grand path to 'the mansion'. Note the 'cave'
under the waterfall to the right.

1935 painting by Adrian Stokes. Two years after the monks bought the
estate from Lord Cowdray, the planting is well arranged. Lord Cowdray
had replaced the wooden bridge with a stone one.

2000. A fully grown Cypress tree obscures the equivalent view above.
This is taken from the left of the bridge seen in the other pictures.
The Abbey Church can be seen to the top right.

2000. The waterfall.

'The Gardener's Chronicle', December 1, 1900
2000. Trees, rocks and shrubs are much the same but overgrown.

Jesus said to them, "Come away with me. Let us go alone to a quiet place and rest for a while." (Mark
6:31)
