Bristol - Avon Gorge
The photograph was taken from the entrance to Brunel's lock in 1842. The ship "Mary Ann Peters" is aground on the slipway of the Rownham Ferry.
On the far side of the river, to the left of the stricken ship, is an old railway property - Wellington Cottage. Note the Somerset abutment and pier of the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Below these is another property which was later demolished to make way for the tunnel on the Bristol - Portishead railway line. |
