Lower Wye Group

Since its formation in March 1993, the membership of the Lower Wye Group has grown steadily. From an initial membership of around 25, many of whom were existing members of the Ramblers’ Association, the membership has grown to a current level of nearly 150. The age range of the group is quite wide and the active members are generally younger than often found in rambling groups.

During the past three years, organised walks have taken members and their guests to beauty spots, not only in the Wye Valley, but in the Cotswolds, the Forest of Dean, the Mendip Hills, the Black Mountains, the Brecon Beacons, the Pembrokeshire coast, Snowdonia, and the Shropshire Hills. With a walk every week-end throughout the year, mid-week evening walks in the summer months and the occasional mid-week day walk, members have ample return for their annual subscription. However, this also supports the activities of the RA nationally, working to improve the accessibility of public footpaths and open land, as well as promoting Rambling as a healthy, sociable activity within the reach of the majority.

The group does not confine its activities to walking alone, but assists in such things as path surveying and maintenance, thus members repay some of the enjoyment that they have derived from the use of the paths. During 1997 the group "adopted" a number of paths in the Lower Wye area between Tintern and Trellech, accepting responsibility for ensuring that they remain accessible and defined. Social activities are not ignored either - a series of events throughout the year not only lend variety to the programme but allow members to get to know each other better in conditions where the wind has not got all the puff.

Anyone wishing to join the group or to learn more about it, should phone the Membership Secretary on 01633 882107 or the Rambles Officer on 01594 530928.                                                                                 [BP]
