Richard - General Office Manager

Although in the last couple of weeks a lot has been said about the problems of ezesurf there are a lot of good things to be said also. I will try to let you see what it has been like through my eyes.
Before going to Ezesurf to work, I was happily retired and did not wish a job, but there comes a time when you must earn some money to live and I seen an advertisment for a receptionist who must like dogs. Thinking halfheartedly I thought that the job would not be for me I arranged an interview for the next day.
My interview was nothing but comical! I arrived at the office to see hordes of firefighters and fire engines in Whitehall street, Dundee and the sound of alarms going off throughout the vast array of listed buildings there. Anyway the at the interview it was suggested to me by Matt that I would be better suited to the position of Internet service advisor on the phones for 08004u this was October the 27th 1999. I accepted the offer of a position and started the very next day.
The offices were dingy even if they were expensive and I soon found that the employees at the office were very nice people and soon became friends with all of them.
I knew that the place was not the best organised when only one week later I was handed an envelope with cash in it with no wage slip or explanation of tax or anything else. But I was happy!
I continued to work hard throughout the problems of 08004u sometimes working a little late sometimes getting away early. It was a perfect job, fun to do and fun to be there. There was always a bellyache of laughter with everyone. I remember when my seat broke and I crashed to the floor!
We soon moved to Milton Street in November and it was a fresh well painted and decorated office, things went well here for us. But for you the customer it begun to get worse. The powernet service which we had transferred the networks to in late October had to be stopped because there was no provision for cli implementation. This was the death knell for 08004u and we did not know what was going to happen to our jobs, but Matt assured us he would sort it.
About this time 08004u or Yes solutions Ltd began talks with other backbones and I was promoted to Visp account manager. I worked hard in this position and began working more and longer hours. I still answered the phones sometimes however when it got busy. At this time we employed some more staff such as webdesigner's and receptionists. We were constantly interviewing new people for a new project, Ezesurf!
We were constantly hounded by Trading standards about refunds. I along with Kevin organised the refunds to be done and then passed them on to Matt to be refunded. Refunds were only getting this far and Matt became evasive when it came to money issues.
We started about 15 new staff on a training course that I had devised and helped implement, they all became firends of ours and we had a larger Ezesurf family. During this time I had taken on more and more responsibility within the company and it was rewarded with a promotion to General Office Manager along with Kevin who already held the post. At the same time Buchanan street opened and was meant to be a satallite of Milton street. With the call centre being based there and HQ of the Ezegroup and Yes solutions based at Milton street. Well most of the new staff were transferred to Buchanan street and Ezesurf lainched to a drink of champange. Then things begun to wrong, we were already a few days late in getting paid which was nothing unusual as it happened every month, it became a week then 2 weeks and no wages. Matt eventually came back to MIlton street and explained to us that he had held off paying wages unitl the Planet server was paid for. This took the last of the money - our wages. Some of us had wives and children to feed, but we were not angry we were still happy, We pledged our future to Ezesurf come what may!
We were all transferred to Buchanan street to cut overheads, the wages came in dribs and drabs and I was not fully paid until after the next pay date. But before anyone got anything Matt bought himself a new computer and a new car. This angered us further but we still believed in him and the company we helped build.
About a month later Matt decided to cut back the staff. He went to Manchester and left us with a list of people to give the sack to. It was a bit cowardly. His visit to manchester was the beginning of what we are doing now. The tax year was coming to a close and we knew we had been paying 33% tax all the time despite giving Matt our P45's when starting. I had not been in employment for the six months prior to working for Matt and should have not paid tax at all or at very least a very small amount. A third of our wages for about 7 months was due back to us, but after no P60's arrived and still no wages slips we investigated it on our own via the inland revenue the office was no longer a fun place to be. The IR told us that no tax has ever been paid and we ha dnot even been registered to pay tax. The only record they had was dundee network solutions and the only person registered was Matt Bryson.
We confronted Mat with this and were told it was being dealt with, it was never dealt with. (unitl now?)
Matt moved away and was to appoint two new directors to control and run the office. Everything was fine and we tried to get things done. Then things started to go wierd, we were promised new equipment and wage rises instead we got our resources systematically stripped and relocated to England, we believed it was going to Manchester but it was found out it was going to a new office in nottingham where agency staff were hired and the agency were paid double what were were on. The final stroke was when final demands and debt collection agencys began appearing and were not getting paid. Matt had begun to ingnore us and not even answer our calls. The phones then went off and we then got all work taken away from the office. The net connection was then turned off and we turned up to work on a Monday to be presented with a sign saying office closed for one week for renetworking it has been closed now for about 2 months. The computers have dissappeared. We were left hanging, not knowing what was to happen next.
Well this is my personal account please couple it with the Planet inferno and Ezepoeple posts to get the full view of what has happened. We wait to see what will happen and pray that we are given justice by a man who has never done anything but use us.

Kenny - Systems and Network Administrator

When I first heard about 08004U I was at my weekly Job Centre search. My Dad was with me that day. I remember seeing a position for Internet Helpdesk Staff, and since I'd been using computers for about 10 years I was finally happy to see something that I could go for that was even vaguely to do with computers in Dundee. So the Job Centre woman phoned up Matt for me, arranged an appointment with him for that day. In fact, the interview was about an hour after the Job Centre phoned. So my Dad and me went to the pub across the road from Union Street, which is the street next to Whitehall Street until it was time for my interview. And so the time came. I made my way up the flights of stairs and into the 08004U office. I remember the first thing I was greeted by was Bardot and Phlop - Matt's dogs. I found Matt in the end room, which was the only room used as an office at that time, and we went into the opposite end room for the interview. I remember I was nervous as Hell about the phone test, to see if I was actually good at speaking to people on the phones and stuff like that. Apart from not being able to find some information and pretty much cocking that bit up, I think I managed to make a swift recovery. I must have done - I got the job. I started the next day at 9am. The next day I went to work at 9am as arranged. I just made it in the door on time, luckily. Through all the joking that was going on, Matt jokingly asked me if I was able to fix proxies a couple of times, but didn't actually seem to mean it seriously, and walked out the room a few times inbetween, which was a bit strange. When he came back in the room I said "Yes, actually". He kind of half-jokingly mentioned that email wasn't working and if I could have a look at the proxy, so I checked it and changed a few settings. At that time we were using Keri's Windows 98 computer to connect to the net, which was the cause of most of the problems since Windows 98 hardly likes to do anything useful. Anyway, I changed a few settings and got email working, and also sped http up, and added news and other port mappings. After that I was the guy that fixed the proxy between phone calls, which was better than just answering phones. Windows 98 gave me plenty chances to have a break from the phone. I think there were only 2 people that didn't have computers to start with - Glen and myself. My initial experience of the company was a laid-back sort of approach to everything. People were being palmed-off with excuses and mostly being told that "We would have to put their account through for reactivation." This involved faxing the details of customers' accounts to our backbone. Of course, this made no effect at all, and the customer was still without an account. Weeks passed before much changed in the office. I would think the biggest change was turning that opposite end room I mentioned earlier into the call centre and making the original office the administration office. That included Tracey with the VISPs, Matt with running the place, me trying to get the network to co-operate for once. By this time I was pretty much always on the computers. I was constantly asking Matt for tools to network with, but he would never buy anything, no matter how cheap it was. Also, more staff were hired near that time. That was when Richard joined us. He was originally hired as a receptionist. But then I was originally hired to be on the phones. It was totally clear that things do change in that office, which is nice to see because most places just stick to the usual day-in day-out routine. So Richard ended up on the phones too. It was still 08004U for a long time, and the phones were ringing pretty much non-stop with people complaining about no service at all, but being charged for the service. See, at this time we were VISPing through Eurex Internet. I couldn't help but laugh at that name, just one letter off. Things seemed to be going well through. Matt had set up deals with Powernet, and bought a new P3 to send down as an authentication server. I'm not quite sure what happended with that, but he ended up owning the P3 himself. I think the staff at that time would have been something like Matt, David, Tracey, Richard, Michael, Kirsteen, Keri, James, Glen, and me. Time went by, and more staff were needed. The Whitehall Street office couldn't really hold many more people, so Matt went in search of new offices. It was round about this time I used to use a firewall as an annoyance to people in the call centre and get pelted with beanie babies for it. Purely out of boredom, of course. While we were in Whitehall Street, not long before we moved, Matt bought a limited company name for use with 08004U, "Yes Solutions Ltd". We never got paid on time, but we didn't care because we knew Matt would come through for us with everything. We trusted him, and we helped him keep his company afloat through everything. There were also personal favours done, like taking Matt's mum 50 miles to her home, picking things up for Matt when he couldn't be bothered, and other things that had nothing to do with the business. We regarded Matt as a friend and not so much as a boss. He wouldn't buy software - he would get pirated copies from friends instead. He always said he would buy the software, but I'd heard so many promises from Matt by this time I didn't really believe a word of it. The time came to move office. We had no warning of it. We were told when we got there in the morning. Some people arrived to move the furniture, computer equipment, everything. The office was pretty much empty when we left. We all went down to Milton Street, some of us went ahead and put the kettle on, switched the heaters on, and stuff like that. Milton Street had a strange layout internally. It had been designed by an architect if I remember correctly. It had one office, a multi-leveled area used for administration, and a call centre. I was put in the office, along with Matt. Most people were in the call centre, and the others that were in the original end room in Whitehall Street were in the multi-leveled area. It was at this time three other people were hired. Kevin, the current Buchanan Street office manager, Lynn was hired through JHP as a receptionist, and Jon, the webdesigner. We were in Milton Street quite a while though. James had created the 08004U website inbetween phone calls. We had gone without pay for 7 weeks about half way through our time at Milton Street, but we still stuck by Matt. We still trusted him to sort everything for us. We had frequent visits from Trading Standards about the non-service from 08004U. We didn't think much of it at the time. We knew the service wasn't happening, and we knew people weren't happy, but again we trusted Matt to sort it - he was actively trying to fix it, make new deals, find new backbones to host the servicee on. No-one left for that reason. There was no promise of pay, unsure of what was to come in the near future. Every week there would be something Matt was unsure of, something he needed help with. We helped him with ideas, solutions. 08004U really worked for the first time, the unauthorised user problem happened because of no CLI. I believe that if CLI had been in place that time, we would still be 08004U. Planet Online and Energis had contacted Matt about the freecall ISP, as they were interested in getting into the freecall internet access market themselves. We made Ezesurf. Tracey, Richard and Kevin made up a business plan for Planet, with close to no help from Matt. He would either give them an excuse, or no answer. The really cheeky part of it all is once the three had stressed over the business plan and got it finished, Matt wasn't happy with it and created one himself from scratch. Tracey, who had been put under so much stress from dealing with unhappy customers and trying to make up a non-existant business plan took two weeks off sick through stress, then eventually left to go to a better job. Eventually, after no co-operation from the only person who knew what the service was about - Matt, Planet approved the business plan and after a month or so gave us hosting, racks, lines, and all the other stuff. We were simply a VISP to one big company. It was at this time that Matt started cutting some fairly large corners. For example, he bought bus advertising for a domain - "eezypeezy.net". He got it pointing at the wrong nameservers - it was unuseable, but the bus advert still went out. This domain has been nabbed now by the Eze staff. Trading Standards were on our back as ever, a lot of people and companies were out of money by Matt and extremely pissed off. And one weird, probably mentally unstable biker turned up shaking and demanding his money back. But somehow, besides all that, Ezesurf took off quite well. We were getting a decent number of sign-ups a day. But the demand started getting higher - more staff again. Milton Street was virtually full. So once again, the search for larger premesis was on. We were paid late, even though there were so many sign-ups a day - so much money coming in, but we didn't see what we were due. Matt found Buchanan Street, our current office. It was big compared to anything else we had been in. It had an average sized call centre, a large office, a smaller office that branched off it, two offices at the other end of the hallway, and even our own kitchen. Also, only one small flight of stairs, even less than Milton Street. Relative luxury. The offices were split up into departments. The end office at the back was the Sysadmin office, the one next door with the cheesy wallpaper was the web design office. Obviously the call centre was the call centre. The main office was used for Matt, Keri and Lynn. David had disappeared back before we found this office. The smaller office was supposed to be taken by Richard and Kevin. We were still using Milton Street though. Some of us got put in Buchanan Street, which was good for those who got moved, myself included, because that office had central heating. But a lot of people got left in Milton Street for a while. Now and again someone would go down to Milton Street in Matt's car and grab some stuff from the office to use in the Buchanan Street office, mostly me since it was only Kevin and myself that could drive in the Buchanan Street office. I remember it got so bad the people in Milton Street couldn't do any work. I ended up helping put a network together. It was only about 3 computers though, at the most. I still had no networking tools, or cables, or more hubs or anything half decent. My tools were a screwdriver and a teaspoon. Yes, the teaspoon got used to drive flat headed screws and the screwdriver was used to put holes in walls for cables. It worked, I suppose. Because Matt wouldn't buy tools to do the job with I had to crawl about on my hands and knees selotaping cables together to get things working. Not long after we moved some equipment into Buchanan Street, a couple of other people were hired - Paul and Diane. Paul was hired because he could write in C and C++. Matt had decided to run a mud - a text-based adventure game, called "EzeMud". Diane was hired through JHP as an Accounts Administrator, and would be pretty much in charge of handling customer account details. There was no computer for Paul, so I had to find spare odds and ends to build one, since Matt refused to buy anything as usual. Paul ended up in Milton Street, as did Diane. Eventually everyone else got moved back into Milton Street for some reason. Matt said he was more comfortable in Milton Street. He bought the unit next door to our's. I think Richard or Kevin put a hole in the wall where a door was blocked up to get into the next unit. A lot of staff were hired. Andy, Wee Kevin, Michelle, Alison, Graeme, Gordon, Daniel, and Grant. I don't know what the story was with Lynn, but she got let go. Apparently she was phoning in sick almost every day for weeks then turning up to her pub job at nights or something along those lines. Everyone was crammed into that very small office. I was at home most of the time coding a remote access user database for Matt, which he didn't use incidently. Nearly all the staff had unpaid bills, demands, final reminders. Most had their own house and their rent was overdue. Matt told us he didn't have any money to give us, but the fact that he bought himself a new £120 mobile, and countless CDs, and would sit and play with them at his desk all day long kind of annoyed us, especially since we were doing the work that was generating him money. This is the stage where everyone started to get very annoyed with Matt - he had really gone too far this time. He had money - he had to have money, there was so much being raked in with the amount of signups he was getting. Then, all of a sudden, the Telewest phone lines stopped working. We found out later they had actually been cut off for non-payment. So, all of a sudden, Matt was more comfortable in Buchanan Street. I would say it was the end of Milton Street and the beginning of Buchanan Street that things really started to change in that office. We started to be left out of the loop, where as before we used to help him make decisions to do with everything. Instead he started turning to his mum, Denise, for advice. She was the kind of person who tried to be everyone's friend. To start off with everyone had no problem with Denise - she was a nice person to know. This time everyone and everything went to Buchanan Street. We also hired another web designer, Pascal, who is excellent at flash, and designed the Surf Saver website, which is now gone from the server. He used to moan at me for using Apache because "Planet didn't support it". Now he uses Apache himself. So the departments were now: Web Design - Jon, Graeme, Gordon, Pascal; Sysadmin - Paul, me; Main office - Matt, Keri, Kevin; Smaller office - Diane; Call centre - Glen, Kirsteen, Richard, James, Michael, Grant, Daniel, and Andy. Michelle, Alison and Daniel had left not long before we all moved back to Buchanan Street. Grant left a bit after that. Matt started disappearing down to Manchester or Nottingham to see friends. It was then that he started issuing orders from there. He told Kevin and Richard to let 5 people go. He left a list of people for them to fire. Paul, Wee Kevin, Kirsteen, Andy, and Graeme were the ones on the list. To this day I don't fully understand why he fired wee kevin, as he was only paid £50/week. He was good at his job. I think it had something to do with the fact that Kevin's mum came up to the office and spoke to Matt about Kevin being paid very late. Something petty like that anyway. It was worse, since Kev had just quit his milk round about 2 weeks before because he was getting too tired with working at Ezesurf as well as getting up at about 5 or 6am to deliver milk. James left a couple of weeks after all this to go to a better job. Things really started to change in the office - Matt was never in Dundee. He was off setting up a new office in Nottingham, unknown to us, probably known by Keri. Keri became Matt's spy. Denise, Matt's mum, got Matt paranoid about our activities in the office. Apparently everyone was plotting against him, so I'm told. This was while Matt left his mum in Dundee to sleep on the floor in the Buchanan Street office. I ended up giving her my TV to watch, since the only form of entertainment was Matt's brand new PC with a couple of DVDs to watch, but with Win2k installed with no auto login. Denise didn't know the password, and neither did I. Matt refused to tell her the password. People started to leave one by one. Jon, Diane, and Gordon left. Pascal left not too long ago. He went back home to France. So now there's just Kevin, Richard, Michael, Glen, Keri, and me left in Dundee. When our P60's never arrived in time, I went down to the tax office to see if there was anything they could do about the 33% tax we had been getting taken off since 08004U, and about our P60's. I was told that there was no record of Matt, and that no taxes had been paid to the Inland Revenue. Easy to see where the money for the new car came from, really - even when we were begging him for our late wages to afford to live. Matt has new staff in Nottingham, recruited out from a company called Reed Recruitment. They are based in Nottingham. I wonder if those people get treated the same as we do. Keri obviously reports back to Matt, and is working from home so I'm told. Glen has started working from home too. I wonder. Really there's just Kevin, Richard and me that care about what's going on. I mean, it's not difficult to understand that pissing people off is a really bad idea, especially your staff who have helped you so much in the past with everything. We understood when we weren't getting paid, as much as tempers were frayed. We didn't understand why we weren't getting paid when you were making hundreds of pounds a day with signups. And especially when you bought your new computer and your new car, continuing to tax us at 33%. You know damn well you were doing it too, I'd mention it to you every week. You don't tell us the truth. You lie to us more than you lied to 08004U customers, to be honest. You start offices behind our backs then "suspend" us for no reason as far as I can see. You leave someone in charge who is more than likely the least qualified of the lot of us. And what of Keri? Are you just using her just now in your little game while you get rid of us? God knows what's going through your head, but clearly you thought we would be working in ignorant bliss of your current activities. Now you hire new managers, new staff, and you tell them all the staff left in Dundee are call centre workers, not managers and sysadmins. We stick by you. You dump us. Nice attitude

my name is pascal, i'm french
i went to scotland after finishing my degree in psychology : i wanted to follow and support my girlfriend for a final year in art school, i wanted to meet people, i wanted to have fun, i wanted to discover...
i spent my time doing jobs (cashier, kitchen assistant) and designing my own website
i applied for the webdesigner post at EZESURF
i arrived for an interview in a small office, in a poor and dirty part of dundee scotland they where a lot of people, something like 20 it was strange : they where so young, most had between 18 and 22
my previous experience in a computing agency was totally different in france 40 well-dressed employees, 4 millions of pounds of activity, nice offices...
i met the boss matt bryson, he was speed, cool : ok pascal, you ve 2 days to proove that you're ok for the the job
i worked for the first weeks in the management room :matt bryson, kerry, kevin (working on surfsaver) it was very strange in my mind : so many questions
* why were they 3 other graphic designers? what did they do? (matt said they where lasy)
* why did he employed so many young people doing nothing
*why my wage was so shit 4.15/hour ?
*why did so many people go in the office to ask matt for money
*why was i telling things like i'll set up an online bank, a web design company...
*why was he so nice with customers in the phone and so bad after and so much more questions...
i really realised this company was a joke when i was sure matt bryson was what we call in french psychology a "narcissic pervert" (seem very confident of himself, lies, likes to control people and make them suffer...) this happened when he first disapeared for 10 days, nobody had any news about him (except kerry for ever in complcity...) except he fired more than half the team

*this company was a joke because when matt went back and spoke about this(desappearing and firing people) he told he took the decision taht ezesurf was going to run without him, with 2 external managers it appears that the external managers where kerry an keving (not so external!) and that they didn't have the power to pay for a phone bill or to refound a customers!!!

as a conclusion, i would say that such a business is closer than a bakery familly business than a serious ISP. The bryson familly could be rich, if they had spend money for paying bills, staff, tax office, advertisment... but they weren't good enough, only interessed by short term little money
that's the difference between real businessmen and thieves.

 

 

Diane - Accounts Administrator

Ezesurf was highly recommended to me by Carol at JHP. I was doing my VQ in Administration Level 2 in my last job and she offered me to carry it on while I was at Ezesurf. When I went for the interview I was told to meet Matt at 7 o'clock at Milton Street. I went to the office only to find out that Matt was in the Buchanan Street office and I had to be taken by a complete stranger (which turned out to be Kevin) down to the Buchanan Street office. On arrival I met Matt. It wasn't very professional as while I was being interviewed there were two young boys also in the room (who turned out to be Daniel and Andy). Basically, all Matt asked at the interview was "What can you do?" I told him everything I did in one of my previous jobs, which was payroll, invoicing, billing, cash handling, filing, etc. He told me I could start but that it wouldn't be paid as well as my last job. He said I would only be on £50 per week. I agreed, as I had another job at nights. I went into work on Monday as planned, only to find out I was being sent home as he wasn't ready for me to start yet and to come back the following Monday. I went in the following Monday as planned, where I met Gill, who started the same day. Gill left a few days later as there was no work for any of us to do. A week went by with me sitting in the Buchanan Street office doing nothing, then I was moved to Milton Street. I would nag Matt and ask him if there was anything that needed done, such as payroll which was one of the things I was brought in to do. There seemed to be a lot of tension in the Miltons Street office, as people weren't being paid. I remember thinking I was fortunate to be getting paid through JHP, and not Matt. Then my assessor from JHP came up to the office. I told him the situation in the office, and that there was no work. He was very concerned about this, and was threatening to put me in another placement. Then he found out that Matt wasn't going to be paying me. Steve explained to Matt JHP couldn't pay me as I came from a job where I was being paid by the hour. Matt didn't realise this, and then discussed with me what I would be paid. He said my starting rate would be £3.60 per hour, then after my VQ was finished he would give me a raise. I then started to ask Matt questions about where the P11's for the employees were, where people's P46's and P45's were and if they had been sent to the tax office, and where the tax books were. I asked him if he wanted me to call the tax office and arrange them to send out the appropriate forms and books. He said not to bother as he would do it later. I started to wonder about this, as he had never taken a P45 off me or made me fill in a P46. He was also taking 33% tax off me, which I knew wasn't right as emergency tax is 25% at the most. He eventually gave me work to do. My job title was Accounts Administrator, which involved inputting customers' details into a database. He should have called me a Data Inputter. After putting their details into the database I would print out an invoice for them and deduct whatever money they were owing Ezesurf. I would then sit for hours on end writing names and addresses on envelopes which I would put the invoices in. The invoices sat for about a month before I left and are probably still sitting there now. To start with it was easy enough as we weren't getting a lot of signups a day, but as the days went on the amount of signups increased until I couldn't cope with the amount myself, and Kevin had to start helping me. Keri had the same job title as me, but instead of helping she sat on hotmail and ebay all day. She did eventually start to do work by now and again activating accounts. After working at Ezesurf for about a month and a bit I eventually gave up my night job as I was working at Ezesurf from 9am to 5:30pm and my night job from 5:45pm to 9pm. This took a lot out of me. Shortly after I gave up my evening job Matt started to get very suspicious about meand accused me of telling members of staff what was in his accounts. I questioned him about this and demanded to know who had been spreading rumours about that, as I had done no such thing. I believe it was Keri that started this rumour, as she was always speaking about people behind their backs to Matt. Matt then said he was changing my job title and wouldn't tell me what I was being changed to. This bothered me as I was doing my VQ in administration. Shortly after that I found another job and left Ezesurf. After I left Ezesurf I went to the tax office to sort out my tax and according to the tax office I have never worked for a company called Ezesurf.

Also he has been taking 33% Tax off of us for 10 Months and has not paid a penny to Inland Revenue also just before he changed from 08004u we where also Unpaid for nearly 3 weeks but he still found the money to buy a new PC and Car yet still struggled to pay the Wages.
