history of pop-ups
In 1996, a developer, who
thought he was going to revolutionize the world suggested
'window.open' as one of the programming tags in the Netscape
LiveScript programming language. They accepted it, and Netscape teamed
with Sun and named it JavaScript.
Then, some 'genius' in the
advertising department decided that they could use this to their
benefit, by 'popping up' a window right in the viewers face. The first
people to use a pop-up was GeoCities, and then it spread to Tripod,
and then AngelFire, and soon more and more companies were either
taking up or starting up a site which offered a free service with
pop-up advertising. It spread like the plague. The only way to get rid
of these annoying windows is to use a piece of software, like KillAd. If
you hate pop-ups, then you should send a e-mail to the people at
GeoCities, Tripod, AngelFire and all the other services that we list
in the abusers section. Once you've done that, spread the word about
popBusters to anyone and everyone.
